The ceremony

The moment you
say yes.

In the Wedding Hall, the ceremony is intimate and wonderfully simple: a few words, your agreement to marry, and, if you choose, the exchange of rings.

The City of Copenhagen describes the ceremony as lasting approximately ten minutes. Then there’s time for the first congratulations — and a moment to realise you’re married.

A building with a story

A little piece of
Copenhagen history.

Designed by architect Martin Nyrop and built between 1892 and 1905, Copenhagen City Hall brings Danish National Romantic details together with inspiration from Italian town halls.

Look up as you enter: brickwork, carved details and the great hall make the building feel like far more than a backdrop. It is still a working city hall — a place for civic life as well as celebrations.

You do not need to go far for variety. Depending on access and the rhythm of your day, the building itself offers architecture, intimate corners and a softer outdoor setting.

The Great Hall

Look for the patterned floor, arches and high ceilings. A wider frame gives the architecture room to tell the story of where you married.

Good for: Walking together, congratulations and photographs with your guests.

The staircases

Beautiful railings and warm architectural details make an atmospheric setting. A little movement can feel more natural than a formal pose.

Good for: A quiet portrait and a different perspective.

A little garden,

Just beyond the bustle of the city, the garden offers a softer setting for a few photographs together. The brickwork and flowers give your portraits a sense of place.

There is something special about the light beside the large window near the staircase. The dark wood, patterned floor and soft daylight make a beautiful setting for a quieter portrait together.

Look up as well: the ceiling above the staircase is decorated with birds, another detail that gives this corner its character.

Make your photographs your own

Three ways to tell
your story.

There is no single right way to photograph a City Hall wedding. Choose the moments that mean the most to you, and we can plan the coverage together.

01 / Close to the ceremony

The intimate essentials

Keep the story close to City Hall: the ceremony, a little time for congratulations and portraits nearby. This is a natural starting point for couples who want a simple, focused record of the day.

Consider: Choose your most important moments in advance; the available time is shared between the ceremony and portraits.

City Hall & your people

Make space for the ceremony, hugs afterwards, a few family or guest combinations and portraits together around City Hall.

Consider: Group photographs and moving between spots take time. A longer session gives the day more room to breathe.

A Copenhagen photo walk

After the City Hall moments, explore one additional area such as Magstræde or the canals near Christiansborg for a more varied story.

Consider: Choose one area and allow for travel, crowds and the pace of the walk. Additional locations require coverage agreed before booking.

Before your day

How to get married at Copenhagen City Hall.

From the marriage notice to your ceremony date, a little preparation makes the journey feel simpler. The right application route and documents depend on your circumstances.

  1. Find your application route

Depending on your citizenship and residence, you apply through the City of Copenhagen or the Danish Agency of Family Law. Use the city’s guidance to find the route that applies to both of you.

  2. Submit your marriage notice

Follow the relevant authority’s instructions and check which documents you need. Requirements vary, so use the current official guidance rather than a generic checklist.

  3. Choose an available ceremony time

Once your marriage notice is approved, you receive a link to the Wedding Office booking system. The city notes that demand is high and waiting times can be up to four months; check its latest information before making travel plans.

  4. Plan the day around you

Consider your guests, travel and the moments you would like photographed. Confirm the meeting point and photography coverage with us before your day, and follow your City Hall booking confirmation for arrival and identification.

Little things that help

Thoughtful tips for
a relaxed day.

A little preparation leaves more room for the moments that matter.

Plan for the weather

Bring a simple umbrella and a warm layer in cooler months. Indoor architecture can make a beautiful alternative, subject to access.

Keep your hands free

Ask someone you trust to look after bags and coats during photographs, especially when you want a few relaxed portraits together.

Gather your people

If family photographs matter to you, decide on a few group combinations beforehand and let everyone know where to meet after the ceremony.

Leave a little breathing room

City Hall notes that small delays can happen. Allow a buffer before your next reservation, particularly if you are travelling elsewhere afterwards.

Think about the story

Decide whether you most want ceremony moments, congratulations, family photographs or portraits. Your priorities help us make the most of the coverage you choose.

Celebrate considerately

The city does not allow rice or confetti inside or on the City Hall steps. Check the current guidance before planning your exit.

Good to know

Your questions, answered.

How long is a City Hall ceremony?

The city describes the ceremony as approximately 10 minutes. Allow extra time around your appointment for arrival, congratulations and any photographs you have planned.

Do we need to bring witnesses?

The city provides two official witnesses. You may also ask two of your guests to act as witnesses; let the registrar know before the documents are signed.

How many guests can we bring?

The city currently allows up to 75 guests, including children and your photographer. Check the city’s guidance and your booking confirmation for current arrangements.

Which languages are available for the ceremony?

The city offers ceremonies in Danish, English and German. You choose the language when booking. If you need another language, check the city’s guidance about arranging an interpreter.

Is the Wedding Hall accessible without stairs?

The Wedding Hall is on the first floor and the city says there is no lift to the room. If someone cannot use the stairs, contact the Wedding Office at least one week in advance about holding the ceremony in the Great Hall. The city describes step-free entry via the side door near the Hans Christian Andersen statue; check arrangements with the Wedding Office.

Can we have photographs during the ceremony?

The city says guests are welcome to take photographs and record video during the ceremony. Discuss the practical details and your chosen coverage with your photographer.

What happens if it rains?

There are beautiful indoor spaces to consider. Access can vary, so an umbrella and a flexible plan are useful, particularly if you also hope to visit outdoor locations.

Can we visit the garden after the ceremony?

The City Hall Garden can be a lovely setting, but opening times vary by season and events can affect access. Check the current information with the City of Copenhagen.

How much time should we allow for photography?

That depends on what matters to you. A short session close to City Hall gives a different experience from a longer photo walk. We will help you choose coverage and confirm the timing before you book.

What can the 20-minute session cover?

The agreed 20 minutes are the total photography time, shared between your ceremony and a few nearby portraits. If you prefer portraits only before or after the ceremony, we can discuss that instead before you book, subject to availability.

When might a longer session be helpful?

A longer session gives you more room for the people and photographs you want to include. Several family groups, a more relaxed portrait sequence or an additional location can all take more time. A simple ceremony with a few portraits may not need longer coverage; tell us your priorities and we will plan together.

When do we meet the photographer, and what if plans change?

We agree the meeting place and photography start time with you before the day. The photography start time is not necessarily the ceremony time. If your ceremony is delayed or your plans change, contact us as soon as possible so we can discuss what can be adjusted.

For the latest rules on guests, accessibility, documents and your appointment, refer to the City of Copenhagen ↗.
